Ski resorts in Georgia

Georgia has four ski resorts, all run by the state's Mountain Trails Agency (MTA). Gudauri is 2 hours from Tbilisi and Bakuriani 3. Mestia, with the Tetnuldi and Hatsvali ski areas, lies far to the north-west in Svaneti, and Goderdzi is in the mountains above Batumi.

Gudauri

Gudauri is the largest resort in Georgia, on the Georgian Military Road 120 km north of Tbilisi. Its lifts run from about 1,990 m to 3,276 m, and all the skiing is above the treeline. There are about 35 km of pistes and 17 lifts, including a three-section gondola down to the Kobi valley. More than half of the pistes are intermediate.

It suits almost everyone. Beginners find English-speaking instructors most easily here, and strong skiers get long runs, freeride and heli-skiing. Night skiing runs on Fridays and Saturdays from 20:00 to 22:00. Non-skiers can ride the gondola towards Kobi for the view and back, which cost 45 GEL in 2025/26.

In 2025/26 the lifts ran from 27 December to 19 April. A day pass cost 70 GEL for adults and 35 GEL for children aged 6 to 12. The road and where to stay are in our guide to Gudauri in winter.

  • From Tbilisi, 120 km, about 2 hours, up to 3 in snow.
  • From Tbilisi Airport, 135 km, about 2 hours 15 minutes.
  • From Kutaisi Airport, about 300 km, around 5 hours in winter.
  • From Batumi, about 425 km.

Bakuriani

Bakuriani is a village at 1,700 m in the conifer forests above Borjomi. The state runs three ski areas here. Didveli is the biggest and highest, up to 2,702 m, with night skiing every day from 17:00 to 21:30. Kokhta and Mitarbi are neighbouring mountains. With the small private lifts in the village there are about 29 km of pistes and 20 lifts, the lowest starting at about 1,640 m.

Families love Bakuriani for its many ski schools, the beginner slopes and the toboggan. Private areas such as 25 Ski Park and Crystal sell their own tickets. A large snowmaking system was built before Bakuriani hosted the 2023 Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championships.

In 2025/26 Kokhta opened on 20 December, Didveli two days later, and the lifts closed on 29 March. A day pass cost 55 GEL for adults and 28 GEL for children aged 6 to 12. More in our guide to Bakuriani in winter.

  • From Tbilisi, 190 km, about 3 hours.
  • From Tbilisi Airport, 205 km, about 3 hours 15 minutes.
  • From Kutaisi Airport, about 170 km, roughly 3 hours.
  • From Batumi, about 285 km.

Tetnuldi and Hatsvali in Svaneti

Mestia, the main town of Svaneti, has two ski areas. Hatsvali is right above the town, and a lift goes up from its edge. The slopes run from about 1,870 m to 2,350 m, with about 7 km of pistes and 4 lifts. It is small and good for beginners and easy days.

Tetnuldi, a 40 to 60 minute drive from Mestia, is higher and wilder. Its lifts climb from about 2,270 m to 3,160 m, with about 14 km of pistes and 5 lifts, long runs and steep freeride terrain. The Freeride World Tour held its Georgia Pro here in 2024 and 2025. The 2026 event was cancelled on 20 February because the snowpack was unstable, and the organisers said they plan to return.

One pass covers both areas. In 2025/26 a day cost 50 GEL for adults and 25 GEL for children. Hatsvali ran from 27 December to 29 March, and Tetnuldi opened once there was enough snow and closed on 9 April. More about the town in our guide to Mestia and Ushguli.

  • From Tbilisi, about 450 km, 7 to 8 hours in good weather.
  • From Kutaisi Airport, about 220 km, 4.5 to 5.5 hours.
  • From Batumi, about 275 km, 5.5 to 6.5 hours.

Goderdzi

Goderdzi is on the Goderdzi Pass in the mountains of Adjara, about 110 km from Batumi. It is the smallest resort, with about 7 km of pistes between about 1,720 m and 2,370 m. Its 3 lifts are a gondola, a chairlift and a moving carpet for beginners. The pistes are easy and intermediate. Winter snow here is often 3 to 4 m deep, which brings freeriders and cat-skiing groups to the forests around.

In 2025/26 the lifts ran from 27 December to 29 March, from 10:00 to 16:00 on weekdays and until 17:00 at weekends. A day pass cost 30 GEL for adults and 15 GEL for children.

The road from Batumi climbs through Keda and Khulo, and its last stretch is steep and often icy. After heavy snow the Roads Department sometimes lets only four-wheel drives onto the upper part. The road over the pass from Akhaltsikhe is usually closed in winter, so from Tbilisi you come via Batumi.

  • From Batumi, about 110 km, 3 to 4 hours in winter.
  • From Kutaisi Airport, about 240 km via Batumi.
  • From Tbilisi, about 480 km via Batumi.

Season 2026/27 and ski passes

The 2026/27 season opens on 20 December 2026 at Gudauri, Bakuriani, Goderdzi and Mestia at once. The Ministry of Economy announced the date on 9 October 2026, citing MTA. As of 19 October 2026, the closing date and the 2026/27 prices are not announced, and MTA usually publishes prices in December. Gudauri is expected to run until mid-April 2027. Before the 2025/26 opening, snow cannons ran in Gudauri and Bakuriani, and pistes opened in stages as the snow allowed.

Every pass goes on a Multicard. It costs 5 GEL once, works at all four resorts and can be topped up again next season. Carry the card itself, as a QR code on a phone does not open the turnstile. Passes are sold at the resort ticket offices, online on tkt.ge, skipass.ge and partner apps, and at Smart supermarkets in Tbilisi, Zhinvali, Gudauri and Borjomi. In 2025/26 online sales opened on 23 December. Passes cannot be refunded.

  • Day pass in 2025/26, adult and child aged 6 to 12. Gudauri 70 and 35 GEL, Bakuriani 55 and 28 GEL, Mestia 50 and 25 GEL, Goderdzi 30 and 15 GEL. Under-6s ski free.
  • MultiSki for all four resorts. 7 days for 370 GEL or 10 days for 460 GEL, used on any days of the season. A season pass costs 650 GEL for adults and 325 GEL for children.
  • Night skiing is not included in a day pass. A night ticket cost 30 GEL in Gudauri and 40 GEL in Bakuriani.
  • Lifts open at 10:00 and close at 16:00 or 17:00, depending on the resort.

What a ski day costs

Beyond the pass, the main costs are gear and lessons, with 2025/26 prices below. The busiest time is the New Year holidays, from about 30 December to mid-January, with long lift queues, especially in Bakuriani, and slow roads. Book rooms, lessons and transfers early. January and February usually have the surest snow, and March is sunnier and quieter. See also New Year in Georgia.

Since 1 January 2026 foreign visitors must have health and accident insurance for their whole stay in Georgia. Check that your policy covers skiing.

  • Skis or a snowboard with boots, about 40 to 90 GEL a day. A helmet adds about 10 GEL.
  • A private instructor, roughly 100 to 150 GEL an hour. For weekends and holidays, book a few days ahead.

Gudauri or Bakuriani

This is the choice most visitors make. Here is how the two compare.

  • Distance. Gudauri is 2 hours from Tbilisi, Bakuriani 3. From Kutaisi Airport Bakuriani is much closer, about 170 km against 300 km.
  • Slopes. Gudauri's runs are higher and longer, with about 1,280 m of vertical against about 1,060 m in Bakuriani.
  • Season. Gudauri is above the treeline and usually skis until mid-April. Bakuriani is lower, in the forest, and usually closes in late March.
  • Families and beginners. Both have ski schools. Bakuriani has more for children off the slopes, Gudauri more English-speaking instructors.
  • Price. A day pass in 2025/26 was 70 GEL in Gudauri and 55 GEL in Bakuriani.
  • A day off. From Gudauri, Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) and Gergeti are about 35 km away over the Jvari Pass, see Kazbegi in winter. From Bakuriani, Borjomi and its mineral water park are about 30 km down the road.
  • Svaneti is worth a week if you want long runs and freeride at Tetnuldi, quiet slopes and the towers of Mestia.
  • Goderdzi suits a day or two from Batumi, for easy slopes and deep snow.

Getting to the resorts

A transfer from Tbilisi to Gudauri takes about 2 hours, and from Tbilisi Airport about 2 hours 15 minutes. Bakuriani is about 3 hours away, book it here. From Kutaisi Airport we drive to Gudauri and Bakuriani on request, see Kutaisi Airport to Gudauri.

From 1 December to 1 March winter tyres are compulsory on the climb to Gudauri, between Mleta and Kobi. When the avalanche risk is high, the road beyond Gudauri towards Kazbegi closes, but the resort itself can usually still be reached from Tbilisi.

Vanilla Sky flies small planes to Mestia from Natakhtari, 23 km north of Tbilisi, several times a week, also in winter. The flight takes under an hour, and in February 2026 a one-way ticket cost 90 GEL. There are flights from Kutaisi Airport too, less often. The planes fly only in good visibility and baggage is limited, so rent skis in Mestia and keep a spare day.

Batumi to Goderdzi is not yet a fixed route in our catalogue, so we quote it on request.

Booking a transfer or a tour

We drive skiers from Tbilisi and Tbilisi Airport to Gudauri and Bakuriani, and from Kutaisi Airport on request. Ski and snowboard bags go in the boot, so tick “Skis / snowboard” when you book. In winter our cars run on winter tyres and carry snow chains. The Mercedes V-Class takes up to 7 people with their gear, and the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is the car we recommend for the snowiest roads. A group of up to 11 travels in a V-Class plus a Prado.

The price is fixed per car, child seats are free and you pay the driver after the ride. If the authorities close the road on the day, we wait, move the ride to another day or cancel without charge.

For a day off the slopes, take the Kazbegi and Military Road tour or the Borjomi and Bakuriani tour, both from your Tbilisi hotel. For New Year week, book early. Book on the site or in our Telegram bot. It takes about two minutes.
