The road

Kakheti is the heart of Georgian winemaking, east of Tbilisi. Sighnaghi, the walled hill town above the Alazani valley, is about 110 km and an hour and three quarters away; Telavi, the regional capital, is 95 km over the Gombori Pass in roughly the same time.

Most guests combine the transfer with the places on the way: the Bodbe Monastery with St Nino's tomb two kilometres from Sighnaghi, the Tsinandali estate and the 11th-century Alaverdi Cathedral near Telavi, and family wineries in Kvareli and Kisiskhevi for a tasting.

If you want to visit several wineries and return to Tbilisi the same evening, book “Full day with driver” instead — it includes eight to ten hours and the kilometres for a loop through the region.

Stops along the way

  1. 01

    Bodbe Monastery

The convent where St Nino is buried, with gardens and a view over the valley — ten minutes before Sighnaghi.

  2. 02

    Sighnaghi walls

Four kilometres of 18th-century walls around the town; walk a section before lunch.

  3. 03

    Tsinandali Estate

The Chavchavadze family house, park and wine cellar outside Telavi.

  4. 04

    Alaverdi Cathedral

One of the tallest medieval churches in Georgia, in the vineyards north of Telavi.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class

The S-Class for a couple heading to a wine hotel, the V-Class for a group with a tasting plan. The roads are good all year, so the SUV is not required.
