The road

Gudauri sits at around 2,200 metres on the Georgian Military Road, the historic route that climbs from Tbilisi towards the Caucasus. The drive is roughly 120 km and takes about two hours in normal conditions — a little longer in snow or on busy weekend mornings in the ski season.

The road is part of the trip. After Mtskheta the highway follows the turquoise Zhinvali reservoir, passes the fortress of Ananuri on its shore and the village of Pasanauri, then starts the long climb through the Mleta serpentines to the resort. Your driver stops wherever you want a photo.

In winter the upper section can be icy and the authorities sometimes restrict traffic to 4×4 vehicles during heavy snowfall. Our drivers check the road status before every departure, and from December to April we recommend the Land Cruiser Prado; the V-Class carries up to seven people and all the ski bags.

Stops along the way

  1. 01

    Mtskheta and Jvari

The old capital and the hilltop Jvari monastery, twenty minutes from Tbilisi — worth an hour on the way.

  2. 02

    Ananuri fortress

Towers and churches from the 17th century above the reservoir; a fifteen-minute stop with the best photos of the trip.

  3. 03

    Pasanauri

Halfway up, the village is known for khinkali — a good lunch stop on the way back.

  4. 04

    The Mleta viewpoints

The serpentines above Mleta open onto the whole valley; in summer paragliders launch from the resort.

Recommended for this route

Toyota Land Cruiser Prado

In the ski season we recommend the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado: all-wheel drive and ground clearance for the last snowy kilometres. For families and groups with skis, the V-Class fits seven passengers and the equipment. The S-Class is ideal in summer.
